3480 Data Conversion
3480 tapes have been commonly used to replace
9-track magnetic reel tapes. They offer more storage space and have a
compact and more trouble free design. Over the years higher density versions have been developed. These include
3490 and 3490E.
The newer formats can hold well over a gigabyte of information. Like
nine track tape reels, any type
of data can be written to a 3480 cartridge. The data is often
written in fixed block and record lengths allowing for the
most flexible use of the data.
The tapes are approximately 4.5" X 4" X 1" with one angled corner.

capacity.
